At the 1985 General Synod, the United Church of Christ adopted a resolution encouraging the United Church of Christ congregations to declare themselves open and affirming.
The Open and Affirming (ONA) process is one way for churches to be intentional about extending the right hand of fellowship to ALL people, particularly those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender in orientation.
Celebrating 75 years and affiliated with the United Church of Christ, a major Protestant denomination, Miami Shores Community Church is a community of people from a wide variety of religious backgrounds and traditions who share our commitment to inclusivity and openness.
Our Open and Affirming (ONA) process was officially launched at our annual Rally Sunday worship service on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010. A series of events were planned to bring together church members, parents of children who attend our school and neighbors to learn more about how to become a more inclusive church.
Through film, Bible study and discussion groups, theological issues and arguments that have been used against the LGBT community were addressed (see ONA Resources). An Opening and Affirming statement was drafted, considered and voted upon at the church’s Annual Meeting on January 30, 2011. By a 98% margin, the ONA Statement was affirmed!
On March 11, 2011, Miami Shores Community Church was officially listed as the 924th ONA congregation in the United Church of Christ. We invite you to sojourn with us as we work to extend an extravagant welcome to all children of God.
