We are the light, at the heart of the community.

This year, Rally Day will mark a major milestone in my journey with this congregation. Last year, I had the pleasure of attending my first Rally Day at Miami Shores Community Church, and I was immediately amazed by the hospitality and fun-filled spirit of the church membership. Even as a newcomer, I was welcomed with open arms by so many of you, and I was able to see firsthand all of the diversity that makes up this church. I remember thinking to myself, “What a great church!”

As I look back at the year, I am proud to have served with this amazing group of people. I am so impressed by the members of this church. Whatever they set out to do, not only gets done, but is done with excellence.

This church truly lives out our calling to be the light of the world. We are a bright light that shines through the darkness of worries, fears, and anxieties.

When it comes to outreach, our church has partnered with countless organizations whose core values and beliefs are aligned with our own. On the LGBTQA front, our church joined the Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, and for the first time, we participated in Miami Beach Gay Pride under an Interfaith umbrella. Over 30 of our members represented out congregation to a sea of people who are not used to hearing the words, “God loves you, just the way you are.” Words that were so wonderfully said by our very own Electra (Jim Buff) as she was the spokesperson for our float.

On the Justice front, we have sent representatives to participate in PACT (People Acting for the Community Together) to help the cause of justice and equality for all individuals here in Miami. We had over 20 members participate in the breaking of the Ramadan Iftar service and dinner alongside our Muslim sisters and brothers at a local Mosque.

In 2016 – 2017 our congregation acted as the living hands and feet of Christ. And with God’s speed, this coming year we will double our efforts for justice, our efforts for peace, and our efforts to witness. We are called to be a shining city on a hill. Let us together bring that light to all!

May it be so!
