The MSCC Missions and Social Justice Committee is going into full swing for 2017-18. Our mission is to advance justice and good stewardship in our community and on the Earth. Here’s an update as of September 1:

SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Our Miami Shores Community Church UCC members have contributed a host of school supplies of all kinds (including seven backpacks, much appreciated!) to the Education Fund’s Ocean Bank Center for Educational Materials, delivering our contributions to families in need. Our last delivery will be Monday, September 11. According to the Census Bureau, more than 30 percent of Miami-Dade’s youngest children live in poverty. So thank you!

FOOD: Don’t forget, the Pass-It-On Ministries at 14617 NW Seventh Ave. welcomes your donations of food and essentials for people in need. Drop your goods in the shopping cart in the back of the sanctuary. Healthy, non-perishable foods particularly welcome. Also welcome: toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, deodorant, soap, cleaning supplies, diapers for kids and adults, bleach. Visit! Donate! Volunteer! Call Pass-It-On at 305-681-1594 weekdays from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. For more information, ask Marilyn Coronado, Daphne Stewart, or Mark Sell

SOCIAL JUSTICE: In addition to our ongoing efforts, Miami-Shores Community Church is proud to be among the 40 churches, synagogues, mosques, and universities in PACT (People Acting for the Community Together). PACT has made great strides in juvenile justice (civil citations), affordable housing (reinstating the county’s affordable housing trust fund) and, now, gun violence. Want to get involved? Ask Mark Sell, Gaspar Gonzalez, or Rosanne Greaves. Some key dates:

September 10: MSCC Social Justice meeting, 11:45 a.m.
September 24 (Noon, at church) and date to be determined BEFORE OCTOBER 2: Two house meetings welcoming your main concerns in the community.
October 23 7:30 p.m., location TBD: PACT ANNUAL MEETING. Important. This is where we set priorities for the year.
February 26, 7:30 p.m., location TBC: PACT North Rally
March 19: Nehemiah Action, 7:00 p.m., location TBD. This is the most important community faith-based social justice event of the year, where the most prominent elected officials and public servants are called upon to do justice.
May 21: North Celebration, location TBD.

Watch this space for more. We are hard at work on efforts for community environmental stewardship and specific causes advancing human dignity for all, regardless of race, sexual orientation, or belief. We welcome your ideas!
