Miami Shores Community Church is thrilled to announce its third annual “Back to School Plus One” campaign for 2018! We’re helping Miami-Dade’s hard-pressed families get school supplies they need for the coming school year. And those families need our help! Our church will host a Blessing of the School Supplies Sunday, August 12, with a first delivery Monday, August 13 (one week before public school starts), and a second Monday, September 10.

According Huntington Bank’s “Backpack Index,” the average cost of school supplies and extracurricular activities (such as music and art) per public school child for 2017-18 rose in the last decade by roughly 88 percent to $662 for elementary school students, 81 percent to $1,001 for middle schoolers, and 68 percent to $1,489 for high schoolers. These costs (roughly $1,300-$3,000 for parents of two students) can be quite a burden here in Miami-Dade, where about 30 percent of school-age children live in poverty.

So, for the third year, MSCC’s Missions and Social Justice Committee is encouraging church members and MSCC School parents to add at least one additional school supply item to their shopping lists between now and Monday, September 10. We will deliver those items to the Education Fund’s Ocean Bank Center for Educational Materials (OBCEM), which since 1992 has provided school supplies free to public school teachers to distribute to deserving students.
