News from our MSCC Mission and Social Justice Committee!
The Miami Shores UCC Missions and Social Justice Committee threw its efforts throughout Lent and up to Earth Day into spreading awareness on protecting the Earth and creating a more just community.
We campaigned for the Earth through weekly messages embracing the UCC’s Three Great Loves Initiative: love of children, love of neighbor and love of creation.
The weekly message campaign focused on how our lifestyle affects our health and God’s creation. One topic was introduced each week, including the food we eat, how we dispose of it, household cleaners, health and beauty products, and the clothes we wear. The intent was to encourage us to think of the Earth as we make our everyday choices.
We celebrated Earth Day April 22 with a meatless potluck featuring a wide variety of tasty dishes and a raffle of “better for us and better for creation” products. Many thanks to all who brought food, set up or cleaned up and to everyone who enjoyed the meal!
Our congregation participated in Interfaith Power & Light’s Climate Action Week April 8-15. This year’s theme was “Charged With Faith: Leading the Way to a Clean Energy Future”. We sent postcards to our senators asking them to support renewable energy policies and we signed statements of our commitment to the Paris Climate Accord.
On March 19, more than a dozen members of our congregation joined more than 1,500 people from all over our community at Miami PACT’s Nehemiah Action Assembly at Notre Dame d’Haiti Catholic Church, holding elected officials accountable in the areas of gun violence, juvenile justice, affordable housing, and treatment of immigrants. MSCC is among 40 congregations around Miami-Dade who belong to PACT. Learn more at www.miamipact.org. You are invited to participate, contribute, and Let Justice Roll.
